NYS Announces Regulations for Part-Time Scholarship Award

The New York State Higher Education Services Corporation (HESC) has announced regulations for its NYS Part-Time Scholarship Award program, designed to provide tuition awards for in-state resident students attending a SUNY or CUNY community college who are taking at least six but less than 12 credits per semester.

Approved last year as a companion award to the more publicized Excelsior Scholarship, the Part-Time Scholarship Award will cover the cost of six credit hours per semester, or $1,500 per semester, whichever is less. Recipients may accept award payments for up to four consecutive semesters.

Eligibility requirements can be found on the HESC website ( Students with qualified disabilities under the Americans with Disabilities Act who are registered with the College’s Office for Students with Disabilities, and who satisfy all other eligibility requirements, may receive awards if enrolled in at least 3 credits.

According to HESC, recipients will be selected and prioritized based on financial need. Financial need is established in the year the award is first granted, and is determined by the applicant’s Expected Family Contribution as reflected on the applicant’s federal student aid report. A lower Expected Family Contribution demonstrates evidence of greater financial need.

Applications for the PTS award are available on the HESC web site and students may apply for retroactive consideration for the 2017-18 academic year, as well as for the upcoming 2018-19 year. The deadline to apply for 2017-18 awards is April 27. The application deadline for 2018-19 awards is July 27.

Interested SUNY Orange students can locate additional information on the HESC website, or may contact the College’s Financial Aid office at (845) 341-4190.
